World's oldest roller coaster, located at Lakemont Park, reopens after 4 years

The world’s oldest wooden roller coaster is returning to action for the first time in years, and it's at a park right in our back yard.

Leap the Dips has stood at Lakemont Park for 118 years.

The wooden coaster has been closed for almost four years, but starting Friday, park visitors can ride this piece of history once gain.

“If you don’t know the history of it, it just looks like an old wooden roller coaster, but once you start actually engaging with people and talking to them you see people’s faces light up. They’re like, ‘wow. I didn’t realize,’” said Andrew Smithmyer, Lakemont Park community relations manager.

Opened in 1902, Leap the Dips is the oldest wooden roller coaster in the world.

Designed by E. Joy Morris, the coaster was built by the federal construction company and at the time, there were hundreds like it.

“It is believed to be the last of around 400 figure-eight roller coasters constructed from the late 1800s to the early 1920s.”

Lakemont Park is among the ten oldest amusement parks in the country, making it a fitting home for Leap the Dips, with both park and coaster standing the test of time.

Staff adds that you can feel the history.

“The historical integrity and the craftsmanship as you look around is second to none. It’s something that you won’t get anywhere else, at any amusement park in the country."

After nearly four years away, Leap the Dips makes its highly anticipated return.

“This will be the first time it’s been operating since 2016. Everyone, not only in the park, but in the community, has been extremely excited to see how it runs, and just enjoy it.

While many visitors have shared fond memories of the coaster, park officials hope many more new ones are made, despite the ups and downs of this year.

“Having the park open this summer is going to try to help alleviate some of those stressful moments. People haven’t really had a summer, but they have the chance to say, ‘Wow. The first time I rode Leap the Dips was in 2020.’ Just having one memory like that might make their year.”

A single ride on the coaster costs $3.

Lakemont's unlimited passes give you access to the entire park; passes range from $16-18.

The park is adhering to social distancing and mask guidelines, as well.
