Where is Fawn Mountain? Blair County woman's disappearance gets world-wide attention

BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — An almost decade-old "missing persons" case in Blair County has been given new life this year thanks to the power of social media.

But family members of the local woman, who has been missing since 2012, are still hoping for closure.

6 News spoke with her mom, cousin, and brother, who say it's now up to the public to help solve the mystery.

It was almost nine years ago when Fawn Marie Mountain disappeared without a trace and the community is still working to find her.

"We hope and pray that that ignites somebody to come forward if they know anything at all," Fawn’s cousin, Bridgette Gill said.

When driving through Blair County, you might have seen billboards with pictures of Fawn Marie Mountain.

Encouraging drivers to look up -- and see those bright red letters reading "missing" -- and the face of Fawn Marie Mountain.

"Just wish she would come home," said Allan Mountain, Fawn’s brother.

Fawn was just 25 years old when she was reported missing "under suspicious circumstances" in Nov. of 2012.

This month marks nine years since Fawn disappeared and her family is trying to make sure she isn't forgotten.

They’re bringing her case to the forefront of people's minds by passing out yard signs, hanging flyers and displaying Fawn's description to keep her story on the surface of the community.

“Fawn was very fun-loving,” Gill said. “She loved to laugh and joke, watch comedies and scary movies, she loved music and making up dances to music, she just loved to have a good time."

A good time turned into a cold case leaving her family hoping for closure and praying for an answer to the question: What happened to Fawn?

“It's like I can still here Fawn Marie's voice is there," said Fawn’s mother Dorothy.

"In my heart, I think she's still out there, but my gut's really telling me that she's no longer around," Dorothy said.

"I just want to know what's going on with my sister. If she's alive, to come home,” said Allan Mountain. “Me and my mom miss her and the whole family does."

Details from law enforcement have been limited..

"Recently we have identified a person of interest in this case,” said Trooper Jacob Rhymestine who’s a Hollidaysburg Public Information Officer. “Currently at this time, due to the investigation being active, we are not releasing that information, just to protect the integrity of this case."

But they say they're still working to find answers.

"This is still an active and ongoing investigation,” Rhymestine said. “The books are never closed on this. This is ongoing. Every day, and every lead that we receive, we continue to follow up on to provide the best information that we can get."

But the family isn't satisfied

"Nothing was being done, and so much time had passed before a proper investigation ever took place -- that a lot of witnesses were lost, a lot of stuff was lost,” said Gill. “So, there was a lot of hopelessness."

At least, not a lot of hope until this year, after YouTube sensation Kendall Rae, who focuses on true crime and unsolved mysteries, made a video about Fawn's disappearance.

It racked up over 1.6 million views and attention for Fawn's case rose again.

"I really hope fawn's family gets the answers that they deserve,” Rae said in a virtual interview with 6 News. “I can't imagine just living with the unknown. The power of the people. If enough people join together and complain or make their voice heard -- that they want answers for this family -- then sometimes we see action, and it's really exciting."

Rae donated $12,000 to Fawn's GoFundMe raising it from $10,000 to $20,000 and encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

"I just can't believe it,” said Allan Mountain. “Hopefully, my sister gets her justice."

All of this exposure has also led to Fawn's Facebook page, called "Bring Fawn Marie Home" going from about 250 followers to almost 18,000, with people now invested in the case from all over the world.

"And so, she has an army now,” Gill said. “It's not just us fighting alone. That has been one of the most amazing things in this journey is to know that we're not alone now. We're not screaming to the world and nobody's listening to us. People are listening now."

Police say that justice can be served by people who know something speaking up.

"Every small piece of information is extremely important with our investigation,” Rhymestine said. “Even the smallest piece of information can crack the case wide open."

Even a small tip could lead to a world of difference, investigators say.

"There's a mother, a brother, and cousins, and a whole family and friends that are suffering in a tremendous amount of grief right now, and we just want answers,” said Gill. “We want to know what happened to her, and we want to get that closure."
