Road Trippin' PA: Elk Expo

Publish date: 2024-04-20

People who live and work around Benezette are gearing up for an annual tradition that is also a vital part of their economy: elk mating season.

Despite elk living in the area for centuries, the Rocky Mountain elk were not always part of the area’s ecosystem.

The indigenous species, the Eastern elk, were hunted to extinction in 1877.

The Rocky Mountain species was brought in many years ago, and through careful stewardship, their herd now numbers around 1,500.

The weekend, the annual Elk Expo will be held in Benezette.

The event runs from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., both Saturday and Sunday.

There will be food vendors, children’s activities, music and more.
