For the first time this year, hummingbirds have been spotted in Pennsylvania.

According to Hummingbirdcentral.com, the first Pennsylvania sighting was in Cambria County Monday.

A sighting notification from Cresson reads:

“Surprised to see our first 2 Ruby-throated hummingbirds looking for our feeders, which weren’t out yet. Now they are!”

Most hummingbirds spend the winter in Central America or Mexico where it’s much warmer the site says.

Every year in February, the birds begin migrating north to their breeding grounds in the southern parts of the United States and eventually make their way even further north later in the spring, the site says.

The webpage monitors the hummingbird’s migrations as viewers notify them the first time they spot a hummingbird in the year.

Research indicates that hummingbirds can migrate up to 23 miles in one day and the first to arrive in the north are usually male, Hummingbirdcentral.com says.
