VERPLANCK—Verplanck’s 89th Annual Italian Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will start on Wednesday at 6 p.m., at the corner of Highland Avenue and 8th Street in Verplanck, and run until Sunday night’s always much anticipated fireworks “extravaganza.” This year’s festival will honor the service of Anthony “Chubby” Capicotti, who died last year, to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society, where he was a member for 54 years, according to his brother, Eugene Capicotto.

“To me,” said Capicotto, an Italian-American whose father is from Calabria, Italy, and who has been attending the festival since he was a youngster, “it was the biggest event in the world.”

Capicotto and Capicotti, who are brothers but have different spellings of their names, and their father, have been in charge of the fireworks at the Italian Festival in Verplanck for most of its existence.

Capicotto, the former president of the Municipal Workers Union in the Town of Cortlandt, will hold an “extravaganza” for his brother who was so enamored with fireworks. The display will be held by the Garden State Fireworks Company, which his brother worked for, and who Capicotto continues to work for, along with Capicotti's son, Anthony Jr.
